Artist/Gallery notes
Rottnest is a beautiful small island off the coast of Perth. It has wonderful beaches, salt lagoons and low hills. The township on Rottnest is famous for it's deep yellow coloured buildings. In a Western Australian summer the sun is intense and the shadows deep. I tried to capture the stillness of the township at midday in the hot sun. The name Rottnest was given to the island by its discoverer a Dutch mariner who thought the small marsupials called Quokka that inhabit the island were some type of rat. While I was working on this painting a Quokka was feeding beside me.
